Abstract
A short introduction to the concept ‘representation’. In the broadest sense, ‘representation’ can be defined as a presentation loaded with meaning. As an analytical concept, ‘representation’ can be extraordinarily fruitful in the practice of media history. Films, photos, television programmes, musical numbers, magazines and news reports can each be analysed as presentations loaded with meaning. By concentrating on the content of the media, the concrete presentations, media history shifts, as it were, into the field of cultural history. Which is where it belongs.
